When someone says “check your privilege” the correct response is not

bonesandbirch:

  • I have freedom of speech
  • You’re just stating your opinion
  • Stop harassing me
  • I’m not sexist/racist but…
  • Stop being such a bitch
  • Everything you say is just opinion anyway
  • well you’re just wrong
  • omg bitch

The correct response is:

  • Thank you for pointing that out
  • I will work on that
  • Can you point me in the direction of some articles or resources?
  • I’ve not thought of it that way before
  • I will be more conscious from now on

Yup. Starting to realise a lot of the problem I have with Facebook and some extent Twitter is one of not just Thatcher’s/Reagan’s children entitlement whining, but also metric fuckload of white privilege.

People just like to be in their bubbles and moan about how those nasty strikers/protesters/politicians/kids/brown people/sluts/less abled/non-heteronormative gay people/queers/socialists/naked people/dykes/femmes/fat people/women/others don’t do things how they want them to be.

At least until they are on the end of discrimination or bias and then they conveniently scream the place down.  Moan, moan, motherfucking moan.

And yup, nearly all white, older and usually male and economically sorted compared to most. It just drives me so nuts I’m tempted to say sayonara to Facebook and commit ‘social suicide’. I’d get far more done. And not have to listen to how ‘upset’ people’s lives are because someone dares to take a stand or live a life different from theirs.
